A Team committed to the democratization of DNA & RNA synthesis

„DNA is the foundation of life science – why can’t we synthesize DNA ourselves?“ That was the question that circled around in Alex’s head shortly after he, Martin and Bernhard founded one of Europe’s first biohackerspaces, the ‚Open Biolab Graz Austria‘, in 2013. Inspired by the simplicity of a Nespresso Machine, their quest to build the first personal DNA synthesizer began – Kilobaser.

We provide lab professionals with push-of-a-button DNA & RNA synthesizers, granting independence and flexibility through instant access to custom oligonucleotides.

Kilobaser´s logo is a homage to Photograph 51, which is an X-ray diffraction image of DNA taken by Raymond Gosling in May 1952, working as a PhD student under the supervision of Rosalind Franklin. It was critical evidence in identifying the structure of DNA.
